The social groups meet with a lot of difficulties, inadequacies and challenges in their life and adaptability, as well as the lacks of experience of life, health and income capacity. Meanwhile, the social adaptation is one of the leading conditions to help people live and exist. The adaptation is a condition to help people overcome the difficulties, obstacles, integrate and exist effectively with the living environment.

The book was published based on the research result of the theme Research on social adaptation of the disadvantaged social groups in Vietnam at present, under the scientific research program of the National Foundation for Science & Technology Development, offers readers a full view of material life, psychology of the disadvantaged social groups, advantages and difficulties in their life and especially the difficulties in the integration into the modern social life. The social adaptation is a psychological problem, it should be studied deeply and systematically. Therefore, a deep and systematic research work from the angle of psychology about the adaptation of disadvantaged social groups in our country at present is very necessary. It is not only scientific but also deeply humane.

The book content is presented in 4 chapters. Chapter 1: Some basic theoretical issues of social adaptation of the disadvantaged groups. In this chapter, the author presented the basic concept and related concept; theory of social adaptation of the disadvantaged social groups; the International Conventions and guidelines, policies of the Party and State about the disadvantaged social groups; some demographic, economic and social characteristics of the disadvantaged social groups (the elderly, disabled, children).

Chapter 2: Actual state of social adaptation of the groups of elderly, sufferers from fatal disease and disabled. The author stated the actual state of adaptation in awareness and behaviour of the groups of elderly, sufferers from fatal disease and disabled; actual state of implementation of guidelines and policies of the Party and State for the disadvantaged group. Indicate the adaptation of awareness of this disadvantaged group through the change of thinking, calculation for production development.

Chapter 3: Actual state of social adaptation of the street, abandoned children groups. The author showed some difficulties of children in their life and actual state of social adaptation of the street, abandoned children groups with living circumstances, such as difficulties in studying, accommodation, working, communication and emotional deprivation. The adaptation of children in the awareness aspect is clarified through the analysis of their thoughts about the present, future life and problem-solving method.

Chapter 4: Basic solutions to help the disadvantaged social groups in Vietnam at present. In this chapter, the author pointed out some difficulties in the implementation of the guidelines and policies of the Party and State for the disadvantaged groups; aspirations, desires and recommendations of the disadvantaged groups, of the local managers; basic solutions to help the disadvantaged groups in our country at present.

This is the first research work in the angle of psychology on the disadvantaged social groups. With the interdisciplinary approach, intensive research from the angle of psychology, along with the systemization, build the basic theoretical issues of adaptation. The book offers readers a quite comprehensive picture of a social group. From that to help managers, social work doers and reader understand more deeply about the material, spiritual life, adaptability of the disadvantaged social groups in order to have appropriate behaviour, and towards human development in general
