International Symposium on “Underwater archaeology in Vietnam and Southeast Asian: Cooperation for Development”

In implementation of cooperation program between Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and Quang Ngai Committee of People, VASS and Quang Ngai Committee of People held internation symposium on “Underwater archaeology in Vietnam and Southeast Asian: Cooperation for Development” from October 14th to October 16th 2014.

In the symposium, there are 150 international and domesstic participants, including 48 international sciensists, researchers from 17 countries, territories, and more than 100 domestic sciensists, researchers, cultural administration officials. More than 20 speeches are presented in three sections of the symposium.

The symposium is forum where international and domestic sciensists, officials discuss, exchange on “Underwater archaeology in Vietnam and Southeast Asian: Cooperation for Development”. The symposium aims to identify, evaluate protential capacity, fact of adminstration capacity, preservation and promotion of values of underwater culture heritage in Southeast Asian; raise awareness and strengthen participation of community in research, protection and promotion of values of underwater culture heritage; strengthen international cooperation in administration, research, preservation, promotion of values of underwater culture heritage for countries in Southeast Asian. 

The symposium focussed on basic contents: history of exchange, interaction at sea in Southeast Asian; old environment landscape; heritage of sank ships and anthropology of contemporary ships in Southeast Asian; application of methods of multi-access sectors, intersector in research of cultural heritage at sea;  share of experience of administration, preservation, promotion of values of cultural heritage at sea; enhancement of international cooperation in research, strengthening capacity of underwater archaeology for countries in Southeast Asian. For Vietnam, this is good orportunity to exchange experience of research, organization of underwater archaeology program, training officials as this is very new for Vietnam.

In the symposium schedule, spokers and participants visited Ly Son island on October 14th 2014; toured Quang Ngai museum, Sa Ky port, heritage of Binh Chau sank ship in the afternoon on October 16th. During the symposium, there are cultural exchange activities, share of information among participants and attendants./.
