Project sharing seminar with the theme "Access to support for workers of labour-related social organizations: Sharing results from F.O.B, EWWB, QTU projects within the ECOW project framework"

Within the framework of the project "Enhancing the role of social organizations and workers (ECOW)" co-financed by the European Union, on the afternoon of October 5th 2021, the Institute of European Studies under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) with partners in collaboration with the Institute for Development & Community Health (LIGHT Institute), Institute for Workers and Trade Unions (IWTU Institute), Centre for Promotion of Quality of Life (LIFE Centre), organized to share the performance results of 3 sub-projects with the theme “Access to support for workers of labour-related social organizations: Sharing results from F.O.B, EWWB, QTU projects within the ECOW project framework”. This seminar was held in an online format.

Representatives of several provincial Department of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Director of the Institute of European Studies, experts and scientists in universities and research institutes inside and outside the VASS...

Dr. Do Ta Khanh, ECOW Project Manager, gave an overview of the ECOW project  

Included in project implementation, the ECOW project funded 3 small projects for a year, performed in all 3 regions: North, Central and South. Project 1: Linking to create a favourable environment for labour rights - implemented by the LIGHT Institute in the North; Project 2: Improving the quality of dialogue of trade unions in enterprises in industrial zones in Central Vietnam - implemented by the Institute of Workers and Trade Unions; Project 3: Strengthening the capacity of social organizations to improve the quality of workers' lives in Vietnam - implemented by the LIFE Centre in the South. Three projects concentrated on supporting workers with different approaches based on the functions, missions and operational goals of each organization, including access to migrant workers' accommodation through the participation of local authorities; promote dialogue between workers and employers via the representation of trade unions; and strengthen coordination between employers, trade unions and civil society organizations to support workers in the workplace.

On behalf of the Institute of European Studies, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang expressed his gratitude to delegates from relevant agencies and organizations who participated in the seminar for the ECOW project. Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang said that the projects which have been implemented since the beginning of 2020 and so far have all finished activities and conducted summarizing seminars.  In the context of the epidemic, the fact that the projects are excellently implemented and completed on time shows the great efforts of the sponsoring organizations. 

Director, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang emphasized that the seminar was an event for all three sponsored organizations to have the opportunity to introduce their project results to agencies, organizations and social activists for workers and researchers. Simultaneously, the seminar also expanded a chance for projects and participants to discuss approaches to supporting workers, especially the coordination of stakeholders such as businesses, trade unions, social organizations, local authorities... to bring the best and most effective support to employees.

Report presented by the delegates

At the seminar, Dr. Do Ta Khanh, ECOW Project Manager, gave an overview of the ECOW project and 3 sub-projects. Following the presentation at the first session with 3 reports: Report 1: Report on the project results – The F.O.B project, by Mr. Doctor. Nguyen Hoang Yen, Program Manager, LIGHT Institute; Report 2: Advancing knowledge of labour law and dialogue skills for trade union officials – Project Improving the quality of dialogue of trade unions in enterprises in industrial zones in Central Vietnam (QTU), by Dr. Nguyen Manh Thang, Head of Scientific Research Department, IWTU Institute, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour; Report 3: Sharing results and lessons learned on the approach to project implementation EWWB - Strengthening the capacity project of social organizations to improve the life quality of workers in Vietnam (EWWB) by Mr. Le Bich Phong, Program Manager, LIFE Center.

At the discussion session, the delegates heard: Prof.Dr. Pietro Masina, University of Naples "L'Orientale", Italy; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen An Ha, ECOW Project Coordinator; Doctor. Nguyen Hoang Yen, Program Manager, LIGHT Institute; Dr. Nguyen Manh Thang, Head of Scientific Research Department, IWTU Institute, Vietnam General Confederation of Labour; Mr. Le Bich Phong, Program Manager, LIFE Center, discussed and debated related contents. The seminar also received many exchanges and discussions from the participants, whereby experts and scientists all offered expanded views on the role of trade unions in supporting the improvement of life quality of workers in industrial zones.

At the concluding session at the seminar, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang highly appreciated the content of the presentation reports and the comments and contributions of the participants. He highlighted 03 projects focusing on supporting employees with different approaches based on functions, tasks and operational goals of each organization; promoting dialogue between workers and employers through the representation of trade unions; enhancing coordination between employers, trade unions and social organizations to support workers at the workplace. The active participation of the delegates helped the project achieve the set goals. At the same time, the seminar wanted to continue to receive more contributions from delegates, organizations, the European Union and hoped that the parties would continue to accompany and support the network of labour-related social organizations in Vietnam...
