International Scientific Conference "Brexit and some impact on the region and Vietnam"

On November 28, 2017, the Institute for European Studies (IES) of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) organized international seminar with the theme "Brexit and some impact on the region and Vietnam" at the No.1 Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh, Hanoi. Assoc.Prof.Dr. Bui Nhat Quang, alternate member of the Central Committee of the Party, Vice Chairman of VASS attended and delivered opening speech.

Attending the workshop were: Mr. Vitezslav Grepl, Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Vietnam and his wife; HE Lucian Bumbacea, Ministerial Counselor, Embassy of Romania in Vietnam; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen An Ha, Director of IES, Vietnam; Prof.Dr. Pietro Masina, University of Naples "L'Orientale", Italy; Assoc. Verita Sriratana, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, with experts and international scientists from: University of Naples "L'Orientale", Italy; Binus University, Indonesia; Chulalongkorn University, Thailand; Experts and scientists from: Ho Chi Minh National Political Academy; Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam; Strategic Institute, Ministry of Defense; University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi National University; National University of Economics; Hanoi Pedagogical University; VASS institutes: Institute of European Studies, World Institute of Economics and Politics, Institute of American Studies, Institute of Sociology, Institute of State and Law Research, Center for Forecast Analysis; Representatives of Vietnam's press agencies came to press the conference.

The people of the UK has chosen to leave the European Union (Brexit) with a narrow vote has been attracting international attention of the world over the past year, including Vietnam. After more than 40 years as a member of the European Union (EU), Brexit is a significant historic moment for UK and EU development. In addition to economic impact, Brexit also has a tremendous impact on the political issues within Britain, the EU integration process, and social issues of both sides. Not limited to Europe, this event has potential implications for the development of other parts of the world, especially in areas where the integration process and regional unification are modeled by the EU, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Opening remarks - Assoc.Prof.Dr. Bui Nhat Quang, Deputy Director of VASS, warmly welcomed the participation of delegates, national and international scientists attending the workshop. He also pointed out that the EU is an important partner of Vietnam, the market leader, the largest ODA provider. The UK and G7 in the region are all strategic partners of Vietnam. Moreover, this is the time when the two sides prepare to implement the Vietnam-EU free trade agreement in 2018, a new generation of FTAs will bring positive prospects for both sides. Therefore Brexit will impact not small to Vietnam.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Bui Nhat Quang suggested, emphasized and recommended participants to discuss some core issues such as: First, examining the causes that led Brexit and effects of Brexit on EU and UK on economic, political and social aspects. Second, analyzing impacts of Brexit on the integration process in Southeast Asia and impact its on relations between the United Kingdom, the EU, Asia-Pacific region countries, Southeast Asia countries, including Vietnam. Third, development forecast in the EU and the UK after Brexit and the relationship between Vietnam and these two partners.

At the workshop, six presenters presented their speeches, divided into 2 sessions, focusing on two main topics:

Session 1: The impact of Brexit on the EU and UK

Session 2: The impact of Brexit on the region and Vietnam

Nguyen Minh Trang & Dinh Thi Huong, Diplomatic Academy: Impacts of Brexit to the UK and Vietnam.

Conference Scene

The reports and speeches at the workshop pointed out some of the causes that led to Brexit and the impact of Brexit on the EU, the UK on economically and politically and social; assessing impact of Brexit on the integration process of ASEAN; at the same time, believing in the future of the EU, the UK after Brexist and the relationship between Vietnam and these two partners.

Summarize the workshop, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen An Ha, Director of the IES, highly appreciated the results achieved after discussion between experts and delegates. The scholar discussed and started to find the profound origin of problems about EU. Different point of view from the source to the corollary of the Brexit phenomenon is still continuing. Explore what has created good values, created prosperity in the region, connected countries, created a sustainable peace to jointly develop for the people in the past years. National interests must be attached to the interests of the people. In addition, confidence in integration trend was inevitable, EU and UK would find the appropriate development path for development.

The workshop is a forum for exchanging useful academic issues for researchers, policymakers and regulators, giving a multi-dimensional perspective on the issues of Brexit and after Brexit impact on ASEAN and Vietnam. The workshop opened up new and deeper research directions as well as opened up opportunities for collaborative research among scientists in the future.
