President of VASS receives US Ambassador to Vietnam

President of VASS receives US Ambassador to Vietnam Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President of VASS received and worked with Mr. David B. Shear, the US Ambassador to Vietnam at the VASS head-quarter on August 23, 2012.

Being with the US Ambassador were Mr. Mark Lambert, the political advisor; Mr. Tim Wiley, the economic attaché; Mr. Spencer Cryder, the press attaché. Other members of VASS included Dr. Nguyen Giang Hai, Head of International Cooperation Division; Luu Anh Tuyet, MA., Deputy Head of International Cooperation Division; Dr. Cu Chi Loi, Director of Institute of American Studies; Dr. Bui Thi Phuong Lan, Deputy Director of Institute of American Studies.

President Nguyen Xuan Thang welcomed Ambassador David B. Shear and introduced the functions, tasks and organizational structure of VASS, the research institutes in VASS and the system of information - documentation, journals of social sciences, humanities, international and regional studies, etc. as well as the current important tasks of VASS. In the past years, VASS have established good cooperative relationships with a number of American universities and social science research institutions. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang hoped Ambassador David B. Shear would have a positive contribution to such cooperative relationships, especially support the information exchange of research outcomes and the exchange of experts. He proposed to build a cooperative mechanism in consultancy, training, scholarly exchange on regional and international economic, political and social issues between the US and Vietnam in general and between the US Embassy in Hanoi and VASS in particular. The President of VASS hoped the US Embassy in Hanoi would be the intermediary for VASS to approach and exchange with the US counterparts in areas of mutual concerns.

Ambassador David B. Shear expressed his pleasure to visit VASS and highly applauded the scientific research achievements of VASS and its collaborative relationships with the US social science research institutions. The Ambassador thanked the President of VASS for receiving and insisted that he would contribute to foster and promote the research exchange and cooperation among VASS and the US leading research institutions. The Ambassador also supported the establishment of an appropriate cooperative mechanism between VASS and the US Embassy basing on a selection of issues of mutual concerns.

The President of VASS and the Ambassador agreed to assign liaisons of the two parties to work for the realization and promotion of the cooperative mechanism in the future.
