Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan, President of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) met Ms. Nienke Trooster, Holland Ambassador to Vietnam

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan, President of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) met Ms. Nienke Trooster, Holland Ambassador to Vietnam on her business trip to VASS at the head office of VASS at No.1, Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi, Vietnam on the 19th June in 2017.

Together with the attendance of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan, there were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen An Ha, Director of The Institute for European Studies; MA. Nguyen Thanh Ha, Head of the International Cooperation Department. To team up with Ms. Nienke Trooster, there was Mr. Tim Krap, the first secretary about policy, media and culture of Holland Embassy.

  In the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan expressed greeted Ms. Nienke Trooster; introduced to the delegation organizational structure, missions, basic functions and the main research direction  of VASS. The President of VASS appreciated the cooperation between VASS and Europe in the past; confirmed that Europe is an important partner in trade and investment of Vietnam as well as appreciate the role of the European Union for the region and the world.

The President of VASS emphasized that the priority research issues in Vietnam today such as sustainable development, economic growth and harmonization of social and environmental issues. Accordingly, sustainable development associated with ensuring national defense and security, preserving the development of Vietnam's traditional cultural heritage are important issues for Vietnam at present.

After 30 years of Doi Moi, Vietnam has remarkable achievements, especially in resolving poverty reduction and international integration. Today, Vietnam is a member of international organizations such as WTO, ASEAN, APEC, ASEM... and in the context of strong development of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the President of VASS emphasized that this context opens up many opportunities and challenges for Vietnam and we need to take advantage of the fourth industrial revolution to develop the nation; expected the two sides would be promoted to exchange experts that focused on the field of climate change and sustainable agriculture.

In response to the President of VASS, Ms. Nienke Trooster thanked VASS for the warm welcome; appreciated the role of VASS in social science research and emphasized that the main researches of Holland would be focused on two issues: security and migration.

  Discussing about the issues that the both sides should cooperate, Ms. Nienke Trooster  proposed two strategic field cooperation with VASS on climate change (water management) and sustainable agriculture (food security) in the coming time. Moreover, She expected to increase academic exchange and exchange of experts and scholars between VASS – Holland on foreign policy (the role of Europe in supporting Vietnam and regional security).

At the end of the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan presented souvenirs to Ms. Nienke Trooster and hoped to be received the exchange of experiences from the Holland partners in particular and Europe in general to contribute to suggest many opportunities for improving research capacity and training between the two countries in the next time.
