Online seminar "The situation of the Middle East in 2020: An overview"

On the afternoon of July 27, 2020, at the 3D Hall, 1A Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh, Hanoi, the Institute for African and Middle East Studies (IAMES) of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) was coordinated with the Embassy of Israel in Vietnam to organize an online seminar "The situation of the Middle East in 2020: An overview" with the participation of some former Vietnamese ambassadors in the Middle East such as: Former Vietnamese Ambassadors Male in the UAE, Mr. Nguyen Quang Khai, Former Ambassador of Vietnam to Saudi Arabia, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Nguyen Tuyen and a number of senior researchers from the Center for Policy Studies (Israel Foreign Ministry), IAMES and representatives of several international research institutes under VASS. The seminar was led by Mr. Nadav Eshcar, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Israel to Vietnam and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Phuoc Minh, Director of the Institute of Middle East and African Studies co-chair.

Speaking at the opening of the Conference, Mr. Ambassador and Assoc. Le Phuoc Minh warmly welcomed the participation of the delegates, especially emphasizing the online model that the organizers chose to organize during the current complicated Covid-19 epidemic. At the same time, highlight the importance and role of research related to Vietnam and Israel in particular, the Africa-Middle East region and the world in general in the context of today's volatile world. Hopefully, with the multi-dimensional perspectives to be approached, the workshop will gather many valuable discussions for both countries.

The seminar was listened to online speeches by researchers, diplomat of Policy Research Center, Israel Foreign Ministry. Specifically: Ms. Ifat Reshef, Director of the Middle East Division of the Center for Policy Research presented “An Overview of the Middle East”; Ms. Dana Raz, Senior Analyst, Middle East Division gave a presentation on Iran's situation; Mr. Yonatan Lewin, Senior Researcher in charge of Syria presented about the situation of Syria and Mr. Orly Rahimiyan, Senior Analyst in charge of Lebonan presented about the Lebonan situation.

Workshop overview

The speeches that highlighted the Middle East with its important geostrategic position are still a region full of volatility and tensions, stemming from internal causes and external interference. Potential conflicts in this area continue to be forecasted with a difficult prospect of finding a solution.
Besides, there are issues related to internal development of countries before the impact of Covid-19 epidemic on the Middle East in general and each typical country such as Iran, Syria and Lebonan, making life Their socioeconomic conditions have worsened and exacerbated in the context of societies facing rising youth unemployment, poverty, civil war, and conflict in Syria. and Lebonan are the most prominent problems in the Middle East today ...

Through exchanges, experts also stated that the cause of disagreement between Middle East countries was also affected by the involvement of countries with large economies. So tensions continue to escalate and unpredictable developments in the next 5 or 10 years are unavoidable.

Closing remarks of the Workshop, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Phuoc Minh appreciated the laws and warmly thanked the comments that with multi-dimensional approaches, experts contributed to clarify current issues emerging in the Chau region. Africa and Middle East; With in-depth theories, scientists have said that the most feasible solution that this area can implement to bring that stability is "negotiation". However, disagreements in opinions and how to deal with current affairs in different countries are very different, so the desired "stability" is still not to be expected in the " short term ”at present. Countries need to have more rational foreign policies, which help soften the "hardships" in their usual foreign policy, to achieve all the problems related to development in the Middle East and Africa. Necessary stability for future development.
