Thought is a miraculous ability that contributes to creating in the human life the image of the whole world with living standards and diversified, complicated value systems. In their practical activity, by thought, the people have realized the world from simply to complicatedly, from unilaterally to comprehensively, from incompletely to more completely. Thought renovation in Vietnam starts from the practical Vietnam revolution, together with profound changes occurring in the context where the world requires us to take a look back at the thought system - the issues on the relationship between thought and life. Thought renovation is an opportunity to study more deeply the nature and development level of our thought. Does it meet the new requirements of reality or not? Should it be changed or and how should it be changed?

Starting from this viewpoint, in the first quarter of 2009, Prof. Academician Nguyen Duy Quy coordinated with the Social Science Publishing House in publishing the book entitled “Thought renovation and renovation cause in Vietnam”. This is one of four published researches by the Professor in 2008. In this scientific research, the Professor emphasized that in order to study thought renovation scientifically, it is necessary to clarify the theory and methodology of accessing the thought definition from the aspect of philosophy. This is a way to help us study the nature of thought that we want to renovate and in order to do this, we must regard the reality as research basis.

It can be affirmed that the information in the book has helped us study more deeply about how the thought renovation cause in Vietnam and what achievements gained during the movement and development for renovation. Specifically, from 1986, Vietnam conducted the overall renovation of the country. Compared with the reform and transformation of centralized planning economy to market economy in other countries, the renovation in Vietnam has distinctive characteristics in two ways: the first is “from bottom up”, i.e. from cooperatives, enterprises and the second is “from top down”, i.e. the decisions by the Party and the State. Such two-way connection has made the renovation in Vietnam free from conflict between the “top” and the “bottom” as well as free from too strong “shocks” created by the too inflexible and voluntary policies and methods of macro adjustment by the “top” leadership apparatus and thus, the renovation has led to successes, especially in the aspect of theoretical thought as follows:

First, we have gained changes from thought based on the in-kind economic model with the absoluteness of the State ownership and the team with the ahead development of the production relationship for the production force to the new thought, i.e. building multi-sector commodity economy, in which the State economy plays the key role in the dialectic unity with the diversity of ownership and distribution forms, distribution is primarily based on the working performance and economic efficiency, concurrently distribution based on the contribution by other resources to the production - business result and distribution through the social welfare in order to promote production development.

Second, we have gained changes from economic management thought based on the centralize planned economic model with subsidy and average mechanism to new management thought in accordance with the multi-sector commodity economy, moving by market mechanism, under the State management, in the socialist direction.

Third, we renovate our political thought by in the direction of removing command administrative management mode to democratize fields of the social life, democracy associated with compliance with the laws, legislative, social discipline, promotion of ownership of the people.

Forth, the Communist Party of Vietnam views that the formation and development of the socialism must be based on the theoretical basis of the Marxism-Leninism and specific practical conditions.

Fifth, the Communist Party of Vietnam pays attention to new perceptions on the human factor, overcoming limitations and disadvantages of the perception on the socialism related to the people, i.e. admitting and protecting legitimate interest of individuals, regarding individual interest of the labors as one of the direct driving forces to promote the socioeconomic development.

It can be said that the book is one of the latest documents that researches this issue fully and systematically in Vietnam at present.
