With a view providing information on the viewpoint of the world scientists on the knowledge society, the issues and fields related to knowledge society; on the characteristics of knowledge society, challenges and prospects of knowledge society for the development of Vietnam in particular and the world in general; contributing to creating theoretical basis for the establishment of knowledge society in Vietnam, enabling Vietnam to integrate and develop, in 2009, the Social Science Publishing House published the book entitled “Face and prospect of knowledge society” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Dan. The book includes 3 chapters:

Chapter I: From information society to knowledge society. The author points out the reason for the overlapping between two concepts “information society” and “knowledge society”; points out the concept and characteristics of the information society; analyzes limitations of the information society and mentions the necessity to change to the knowledge society; concurrently indicating the concept of knowledge society and summarizing comments on the characteristics of knowledge society.

Chapter II: Key backbones for building knowledge society. The author defines that there are 4 main backbones, namely main backbone that plays the important role in ensuring human rights and democratic rights for the people to build a global information society and knowledge society in the future; knowledge economic backbone characterized by nonstop expansion of information and communication area, one of the backbones to formulate the knowledge society; scientific - technological backbone as the development lever of the knowledge society with biotechnology, materials technology, energy technology and information technology; education and training backbone as one of the main resources for producing information and knowledge. With these backbones, knowledge society will overcome disadvantages of information society to gain prominent features of a sustainable development society.

Chapter III: Challenges and prospects of development of knowledge society. The author mentions the challenges to be solved in the scientific management, Internet administration, cultural diversity in knowledge society, environmental protection and culture; analysis of role of knowledge society for the sustainable development and thoughts on the knowledge society development way in Vietnam.
