The Mid-Autumn Festival 2019: Colourful Gia Lai culture


On September 7 and 8, 2019 (August 9-10 Lunar Calendar), from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Nghia Do Ward, Cau Giay District, Hanoi) will take place the Mid-Autumn Festival 2019: Colourful Gia Lai culture. The program will be co-organized by the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology and Gia Lai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Through the performances of gongs, traditional musical instruments, folklore singing and dancing, knitting basket, sculpting, weaving brocade, and enjoy the culinary flavors of the Central Highlands... The festival will introduce to the public the cultural characteristics and people of Gia Lai. 

At the festival, the public will be able to see the perform fantastic lion dances, the charming laughter of the God of Earth, combined with the drums, cymbals, and screams, creating a joyful and bustling atmosphere. In the outdoor area, the children will also be able to participate in activities such as: making typical folklore toys during the Mid-Autumn Festival (paper doctor, he hit the stick, star-shaped lantern, monk lamp, light pull troops, mashed dried fruit…) under the guidance of craftsmen and volunteers. 

Along with performing arts activities and making folklore toys, visitors will have the opportunity to join their relatives in exciting folklore games like standing statue, stealing cucumber (Giarai), butting buffalo, wood stone, sick tiger (Bana)… or participate in activities to experience science through folklore toys: borrow the wind to push the kite, learn the mysterious motion of the light pull troops. Through scientific experiments involving wind power and air convection, visitors will understand why the kite can fly high and the light pull troops can move.

The organizers of the festival said: Colourful Gia Lai culture is a unique cultural event, providing the public with multi-dimensional cultural colours about people and the land of Gia Lai; helping the public, young people, especially the children to enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival atmosphere; helping the public, young people, especially the children to enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival atmosphere imbued with the indigenous ethnic identity of Gia Lai people right in the capital Hanoi. Thereby, contributing to raising the awareness that Gong culture is a precious cultural heritage which is considered as a symbol of the people in the Central Highlands region. Thanks to the sense of preservation of the villagers, this heritage is gradually being conserved and promoted strongly. On the other hand, this is also an opportunity for artisans to directly introduce folklore associated with scientific knowledge through the creation the toys; stimulate the scientific curiosity of small children with lots of new joys and insights; highlighting the colourful culture of the nation on the occasion of the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival in 2019.
