Prof.Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, President of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, meets with Country Director of the World Bank in Vietnam

On 9th November 2012, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, member of the Party Central Committee, President of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) met with Mrs. Victoria Kwakwa, Country Director of the World Bank (WB) in Vietnam, accompanying whom were experts of the WB in Vietnam.

VASS attendants to the meeting with the WB delegation in Vietnam, along with President Nguyen Xuan Thang included Dr. Nguyen Giang Hai, Director-General of International Cooperation Department; Dr. Nguyen Thang, Director-General of the Center for Analysis and Forecasting; and Mr. Nguyen Thanh Ha (MA), secretary to the President of VASS.

At the meeting, Mrs. Victoria Kwakwa discussed with the President of VASS the US economy’s positive signs after the presidential election results, the good signs of the US – China relation. However, Mrs. Victoria said that the global economy has yet been free from difficulties. In the future, the US government will have to make several important decisions, and many expenses can be reduced. Mrs. Victoria shared her thoughts over several socio-economic issues of Vietnam following the Conference of the Party Central Committee, and she supposed that Vietnam will be able to achieve the desired level of economic growth.

 

Prof.Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang pointed out a number of new features which the 6th Conference of the Party Central Committeehas focused on, such as conducting serious evaluation of the 2012 economic situation, or issues related to state-owned enterprises, and land issues. The President of VASS also shared his thoughts over some points that need resolving like non-performing loans, inventory, and issues related to enterprises having state investment capital. Prof. Nguyen Xuan Thang emphasized that it is necessary to recognize the positive aspects which state-owned enterprises accomplished in a number of specific areas where the private sector did not want to invest in. He agreed that there were difficulties related to the economic growth of Vietnam by end of 2012, but also stressed that it is essential to contemplate towards growth of 2013 and 2014.

Both parties discussed the role of research in resolving the national issues, and affirmed the cooperation between VASS and the WB in developing highly practical projects.
