President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences - Prof.Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan welcomed the Vice Rector in charge of Research and Innovation, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, RMIT University

On the morning of July 20, 2018, at the headquarters of Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), No. 1 Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh, Hanoi, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan, President of the Academy met Prof. Calum Drummond, Vice Rector in charge of Research and Innovation, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, RMIT University came and worked at the Academy.

Attending the meeting with Prof.Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan were: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, Director of Southeast Asia Research Institute; MSc. Van Thi Thanh Binh, Deputy Director of International Cooperation Department and specialists of International Cooperation Department.

Attending with Prof. Calum Drummond was: Dr. Pham Thi Thu Tra, Research Director, RMIT University.

On behalf of Academic Leaders, Prof. Nguyen Quang Thuan expressed his pleasure to welcome Professor Calum Drummond to visit and work at the Academy; he also presented an overview of structure, functions and main research tasks of VASS. The research content that VASS focused on was the current socio-economic issues in Vietnam with a number of different issues such as economic restructuring in the new context, innovation in the context of the industrial revolution 4.0, macroeconomic issues, etc.) Social issues such as poverty reduction, equity and social security, ethnicity, religion, family, gender; along with international issues: assessing the international context, the relationship between major countries, regional issues; thus, recognizing new dynamics of the region and the world; on that basis, identify appropriate development policies for Vietnam. Through scientific research, in addition to providing knowledge to society, contributing to the social sciences and the humanities, the Academy also provided policy advice to the Party and State in planning paths, policies, strategies, development policies for the country in each period.

Responding to President VASS, Prof. Calum Drummond expressed his honor and thanks for the warm welcome of the Academy and would be ready to cooperate with VASS on fields of mutual interest. Professor - Vice Rector also expressed his belief in the ability of each party to bring into full play the value of Vietnamese studies and hoped that two parties would support, share experiences and jointly develop common research project.

Based on the visit to RMIT of VASS's President in March 2018, discussing the plan of cooperation in the future, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan and Prof. Calum Drummond continued to share about possibilities and prospects for cooperation in the fields of two parties. Two fields of mutual interest are (research and training). As a result, the President and Vice Rector agreed to build a joint research project and a specific cooperation roadmap to share experiences and knowledge of each party; organizing a joint science workshop to strengthen the relationship and academic exchange between scientists; discussing solutions and ways to further promote research collaboration opportunities between VASS and RMIT (build research topic together); RMIT University regularly provides information on research funding opportunities as well as opportunities for exchange of lecturers and students between research/training facilities of RMIT and VASS.

At the end of the meeting, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan and Prof. Calum Drummond shared specific information about the clue cooperation of each party. Accordingly, the Southeast Asia Research Institute will be a clue cooperation on scientific research and the Academy of Social Sciences is a cooperative agency on education with RMIT. Thereby, contributing to the further scientific cooperation between VASS and RMIT in the future.
