In the occasion of visiting the Academy in 1996, Mr. Do Muoi – former General Secretary of the CPV said “the Academy has tried to overcome all backwards in order to catch up with latest issues and meet developing requirements of the country in new circumstances”. Especially, they contributed in adding, explaining and clarifying CPV’s viewpoints of socialism and the pathway to achieve the socialism in Vietnam. Many conclusions were used as the foundation to make Resolution, Plans, Policies of State and Communist Party. They played important roles in the successful reformation. General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has also made a speech in the celebration. In the 60 years of development, all generations of VASS have always been great examples of responsibilities and excellently completed tasks assigned by Communist Party and State; they have built VASS up as a leading and trusted institute of Vietnam. Also, he listed out some limitations which the Academy should overcome in next period. For now, Vietnam is in its important time of development while facing unexpected changes due to complex global circumstances. Globalizations, international integration, collaboration for development are basic trends. However, global competition, benefit conflicts and impacts on politics, economy, and culture between nations, religions and belief are increasingly fierce; wars, terrorism, subveriosn, island sovereignty and conflicts are still happening everywhere. Human is facing with many traditional and non – traditional threats, for example, population, social structure changes, inequality, climate changes, increasing sea level, web security so on. Successes of 30 years of reformation have created new forces for implementing the purpose of a prosperous people, strong country, democracy, fairness and civilization. Vietnam is currently facing with many difficulties when there are many limitations and disadvantages in the renewals and social – economical development. Complex issues might affect the implementation of a sustainable and fast growth. They become new requirements for social sciences and humanities in which many theories of nation growth should be clairified and scientists need to find out the correct answers for those requirements.  As a result, the role of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences is very important.

On behalf of generations of senior scientists, Professor Pham Xuan Nam, former Deputy Director of the National Centre for Social and Human Sciences (now known as the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) had a speech on the memories, the great contribution of the senior management staff of the Academy, of the great scientists , the leading intellectuals of the country that have worked for the Academy over the periods, and the so-called "golden generation" of the national social science, including: Nguyen Khanh Toan, Tran Huy Lieu, Tran Phuong, Pham Huy Thong, Vu Khieu , Dao Van Tap , Pham Nhu Cuong, Dang Thai Mai, Ca Van Thinh , Pham Thieu, Dao Duy Anh , Tran Van Giau, Tran Van Giap, Cao Xuan Huy, Vu Ngoc Phan, Hoai Thanh, Cao Huy Dinh, Dinh Gia Khanh, Nguyen Dong Chi and many other scientists. Under the guidance and tutelage of those "golden generation" scientists, numerous social sciences researching staff of the next generation has gradually matured. In his speech, Professor also points out the highly impressive and significant research works, which is the scientific achievement of the staff of the Academy over the periods, the activities of dozens of key personnel who had been encouraged to join the editorial group for the Credo -1991, editorial group for 1991-2000 Socio Economic Development Strategy, editorial group for some resolutions of the CPV - Central Committee and Central Politburo on science, education, culture, etc. in the 90s of the last century. In recent years, the Academy has encouraged a large number of scientists to focus on completing the key tasks given by the Politburo, the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Government, review, complement and develop the Credo 1991 after 20 years of implementation, summarize the 2001-2010 Socio-Economic Development Strategy and contribute to the 2011-2020 Socio-Economic Development Strategy. The Academy has great recommendations about the perspective for sustainable development of the country, about the need to transform to the growth model based on comparative advantages to effectively participate in global value chains and production networks, about the Communist Party’s Leadership enhancement, the Government’s management quality and efficiency improvement, about the solutions for the cultural, social, ethnic, religious problems in the new situations, etc., all of which have been received and highly appreciated by the Authorities.  Prof. Pham Xuan Nam expressed his firm belief that the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences would enter a new stage of development with greater achievements in all fields of activities.

On behalf of young generation of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Dr. Vo Xuan Vinh – Secretary of Hochiminh Youth Union has proudly talked about the young generation as those who will keep making history for the VASS. They understand today achievements are results of great scientists since the French and American wars, border wars until independent times and now when the country is in the pathway of renewals, opening and international integration. He stressed on how important the research staff of VASS are. Firstly, it is necessary to promote the requirements of Party and VASS’s directors about improving specialized ability, foreign language and research skills. This will improve the research level and social sciences management as high as countries in ASEAN in 2020 and step by step reach to the international level according to the Resolution no. 20-NQ/TW in October 31st 2012 by the CPV Central Committee on science and technology. Secondly, he admitted the research achievements as the results of applying convenient conditions, for example, stable and peaceful of nation, to access the advance knowledge of the world. He stressed on the fact of being VASS’s scientists. They will try their best to inherit previous generations’ achievements as well as meet the expectations of scientists in last generation and society. Today, there are up to 30 doctoral, 400 masters and a big amount of researchers who are pursing the Doctor and Master degrees. Many of them have proven their scientific ability with many research works published worldwide.  As presenters of big conferences and seminars, they have joined in many international workshops.  These figures would be the basic foundation to reach to further achievements. “Be proud of the past, be trusted in presence, and be ready for the future” are the slogan which young researchers of VASS aim to obtain.

The 60th anniversary was held in a warm and solemn atmosphere between many generations of VASS who feel proud of being those who contributed to the national science.

Dr. Vu Hung Cuong
