Exhibition Opening: The Central Highlands of Vietnam in the 1950s

On the celebration of 40th year of diplomatic relations between France and Vietnam, Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (part of VASS) has held an exhibition of photo album on “The Central Highlands of Vietnam in the 1950s of the 20th century” in July 10th 2014. Photos were taken between 1952 and 1955 by Jean-Marie Duchange – a French photographer. The photo album,with total 200 pictures in size 6 x 6, was produced from two modern cameras asRolleiflex and Samflex Rolleiflex. The collection is carefully protected by author and his family so they are in good conditions. Recently, Mrs. Évelyne Duchange andMrs. Nadège Bourgoin, daughter grandchild of author, have provided negative films to Quai Branly Museum (France) as award and part of collection was contributed to Vietnam Museum of Ethnology.

Public will have chance to see 34 photos in big size, squared frame which are display of original negative films through the Exhibition. These photos were printed in France, using transparent materials which allow people to enjoy the photos from two sides. Precious photos were presented and displayed in an opening space in order to create a friendly environment to public as well as make them feel close to the life at that time. On the other hands, 200 photos were set up into a mosaic to offer an overall view for people who came to the exhibition. There is also a video clip made for public to enjoy the collection in various methods.

The exhibition provide people a live portrait of old people, little boys and girls, and young generation in unique costumes of Central Highlands in middle years of the 20th century. Also, photos displayed about the delivery methods by elephants and other daily events as doing farm, pounding rice, textiles, mashing cotton so on, holiday events as funeral, bull fighting, greeting seasons. Author even took detail photos about the unique architecture of Central Highlands, for example, long house, rice warehouse, tomb so on.

Besides, the Rolleiflex camera, which was a working device of author, was also displayed at the exhibition. Public will explore the picture technology witha camera obscura, known as the precursor of camera today, is showed at the exhibition. This giant tool showed the operations of camera with the image reflected down through the camera obscura.

After the exhibition in Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (6 months), the collection will be introduced in its origin – Central Highlands.
