Scientific conference "China's debt trap and its impact on South Asian countries"

On March 30, 2023, the Institute of India and Southwest Asian Studies under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, chaired and organized the Scientific Conference "China's debt trap and its impact on South Asian countries". ASIAN". The workshop aimed to clarify the reality of using debt instruments, China's lending policy to other countries and its effects on South Asian countries.

Attending the Conference were Dr. Pham Cao Cuong - Deputy Director in charge of the Institute of Indian and Southwest Asian Studies; Scholars of the Institute of China Studies, the Institute of World Economics and Politics, the Institute of European Studies, the Institute of American Studies, and the entire staff of the Institute of India and Southwest Asian Studies.
 
At the Workshop, presentations were presented with content focusing on 3 main issues: (i) China's policy and strategy for loans to South Asian countries; (ii) Effects of China's debt trap on South Asian countries; (iii) Risks and challenges of South Asian countries when caught in China's debt trap.
 
Speaking at the Conference Dr. Pham Cao Cuong - Deputy Director in charge of the Institute of India and Southwest Asian Studies emphasized: "From assessing China's debt trap to see how it affects other regions and countries... We see that this has a two-way effect, positive and negative. However, the impact will depend on the perspective of each country receiving the debt from China.
 
The presentations from representatives of the Institute of India and Southwest Asian Studies, the Institute of China Studies, the Institute of Indian and Southwest Asian Studies were highly appreciated by the stakeholders. In particular, the speech of Dr. Vu Quy Son - Institute of Chinese Studies, attracted a lot of attention at the seminar, when the content of the presentation showed the view and assessment of Beijing and the West about China's "debt trap", and at the same time gave a perspective on how China is taking advantage of a "debt trap" to criticize the US and the West.
 
The seminar "China's debt trap and its impact on South Asian countries" is an opportunity for speakers, scholars and scientists to identify the risks, challenges, and dependence of South Asian countries, when caught in debt traps, Chinese loans or Chinese control over South Asian countries. From there, it is clear how China creates debt traps for South Asian countries and the impacts, challenges and risks of South Asian countries when involved in China's debt trap.

Debt-trap diplomacy is an economic policy or instrument in which one country helps another to build a strategic infrastructure project by providing a huge loan, sometimes more than the estimated cost of project. The number of loans provided by China is very large and even helps the country complete the project but, in turn, also makes the country dependent on it.
