From August 14 to 18, 1945, the General Uprising broke out and won the victory in the countryside of the Northern Delta, most of the Central region, a part of the South and in the towns of Bac Giang, Hai Duong, Ha Tinh, Hoi An, Quang Nam… The uprising to seize power was successful on August 19, 1945, in Hanoi; on August 23, 1945, in Hue, Bac Can, Hoa Binh, Hai Phong, Ha Dong, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, Bac Lieu...; on August 25, 1945, in Saigon - Gia Dinh, Kon Tum, Soc Trang, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Bien Hoa, Tay Ninh, Ben Tre... In Con Dao, the Party Committee of Con Dao prison led the imprisoned revolutionary soldiers to revolt in order to seize power. Within 15 days of the end of August 1945, the General Uprising was successful in the whole country and our people gained a complete victory.
On September 2, 1945, at the grand assembly on the historic Ba Dinh Square, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming before the nation and the world at large the birth of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam (now the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam).
The August Revolution was the result of a long process of indomitable and unyielding struggle of the people under the leadership of the Communist Party and President Ho Chi Minh. Fighting spirit had been forged during periods of extreme hardship, revolutionary climaxes and adversity in a blood-drenched land. The Party has gradually matured, built and developed in terms of organization and force, creating and seizing opportunities to lead the people to rise to the General Uprising with the aim of taking power back to the people.
The August Revolution changed our people’s life and destiny, overthrew colonialism and imperialism for nearly 100 years and abolished feudalism for thousands of years, enabled our people to escape slavery and master the country, and opened up the best outlook for the Vietnamese people in the modern age - the era of national independence and socialism.
The August Revolution was a victory of Marxism-Leninism, which was creatively applied to the Vietnamese situation. It was also the victory of Ho Chi Minh's thought and the correct and creative revolutionary way of the Party, linking national independence with socialism, national strength with the strength of the times. It was a brilliant result of the great strength of national unity.
The immortal spirit of the August Revolution!
When talking about the purpose of the August Revolution, President Ho Chi Minh pointed out: "The purpose of the August Revolution is to regain peace, unification, independence and sovereignty for the Fatherland and the people. On September 2, 1945, Vietnam declared independence, giving birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, free general elections were held, the people of the country elected the National Assembly, the National Assembly ratified the Constitution and elected the Central government, local government from communes to provinces were appointed by the people. From there, we began to realize unity, independence and democracy. "
President Ho Chi Minh affirmed: "The victory of the August Revolution was a resplendent milestone in Vietnam's history which opened a new era of national independence, freedom and socialism. It is an enormous change in the history of our country.”
British scholar Thomas Hodgkin assessed: “The August Revolution has been the most important event in world history since the Russian October Revolution.” It was a revolution led by the Communist Party that was only 15 years old. It was the first revolution that succeeded in overthrowing colonialism and feudalism…
The August Revolution signaled the demise of the colonial system worldwide, marked the beginning of a new era, with the declaration in the Declaration of Independence (September 2, 1945) that "All the nations on the earth are equal from birth, all the nations have the right to live, to be happy and to be free". The human rights of persons become the interests of the nation.
The 76th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2) took place in the context that the entire Party, people and army are actively implementing the Resolution of the 13th National Congress of the Party and the whole nation joining hands in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an opportunity for the whole people to better understand the profound historical and practical values that the August Revolution has brought, to be fully aware of the responsibility of today's generations in applying and developing valuable lessons, experiences and the ideas of bringing the era of the August Revolution into the national renewal process. It is also a motivation for the whole country to overcome the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic, to strive for the goal of wealthy people, a strong country, a democratic, equal and civilized society; firmly building and defending the Socialist Vietnam./.
