On 17 January 2013, at the headquarter of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), Prof.Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, member of the Party Central Committee, President of VASS met H.E. Kim Chang Il, Ambassador of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in Vietnam
The Ambassador was accompanied with Mr. Ryom Myong Nam, First Secretary of the Embassy, and Mr. Ri Ho Jun, Political Counsellor. VASS attendants to the meeting along with President Nguyen Xuan Thang included Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Giang Hai, Director-General of International Cooperation Department; Dr. Dang Xuan Thanh, Deputy Director-General of the Institute for Northeast Asia Studies.
In the meeting, the Ambassador discussed with the President of VASS how Vietnam has overcome challenges to develo and reap enormous achievements in all fields. The Ambassador congratulated VASS for successfully organizing the 4th Vietnam Studies Conference in November 2012. This event was an important one clarifing issues that need further research, and an opportunity to promote social sciences. The Ambassador desired that North Korean scholars will be attending in the next Vietnam Studies Conference. The Ambassador also informed that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPR of Korea) celecrated the 100th birth anniversary of former President Kim Il Sung in 2012. He also added that DPR of Korea successfully launched satellites in the same year, and the satellites have been in good operations till now, which opens a new perspective for the DPR of Korea.

Prof.Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang appreciated the efforts in achieving the set goals made by his peers from DPR of Korea which generate momentum for development. He also thanked the Ambassador for having good remarks on Vietnam, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, and the achievements made by social sciences in 2012 in the context where Vietnam faced many difficulties and challenges. Prof.Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang also shared his thoughts over issues that both parties need cooperation namely in the field of social sciences and humanity in the future, exchanging information and scholars.
The Ambassador wished to regularly exchange social science research which enables North Korean scholars to visit and exchange with VASS. The Ambassador invited the President of VASS to visit DPR of Korea on the occasion of celebrating 60 years of reunification of Korea (27 July 1953 – 27 July 2013).
The President of VASS, Prof.Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang thanked the Ambassador and also reiterated the DPR of Korea delegation to visit VASS this year as agreed.
