Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) – Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Nguyen Anh met the delegation from Jeju Peace Institute (JPI) led by Mr. Suh Chung- ha, President of JPI in their first business trip to VASS at No. 1, Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi, Vietnam on the 15 February 2017.

Together with the attendance of the Vice President of VASS, there were Dr. Tran Quang Minh, Director of the Institute for Northeast Asian Studies; Dr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong, Director of the Institute for Chinese Studies; MA. Nguyen Thanh Ha, the Head of the International Cooperation Department.

To team up with Mr. Suh Chung – ha, there were researchers from JPI.

In the meeting, on behalf of leaders of VASS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Nguyen Anh congratulated Mr. Suh Chung - ha on his new position and greeted the delegation in their business trip to VASS. The Vice President briefly introduced to the delegation missions, functions and organizational structure of VASS. He emphasized that one of the current main functions of VASS was cooperation activities and international integration when there were a lot of changes in the region; especially concentration on analysis of new moves in several countries, the impacts of changes in the status of great powers as well as bilateral relationship  to regions (Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and Vietnam).

The Vice President, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Nguyen Anh also highly appreciated the special relationship between Vietnam and South Korea in recent years, however, he emphasized that the two sides should continue building and developing the cooperative relationship in the current context. Also, he confirmed that enhancing capability and developing cooperation initiatives among countries would play an essential role in maintaining stability and peace in ASEAN; the experience of Korea and predecessors would be useful for the cooperation between the two countries.

Discussing issues that both sides needed to study and cooperate on, on the basis of an exchange of a plan for the Jeju Peace Forum in 2017, which would focus on ASEAN, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Nguyen Anh hoped that through the forum, the message of peace, cooperation and stability would be brightened up and the roles of ASEAN, Korea and Vietnam in maintaining peace and stability in the region when the world situation had been increasingly complex would be affirmed.

In order to strengthen the scientific cooperation between VASS and JPI in the future, the Vice President suggested some research topics including the relation among US, China, Japan and Korea; Russia – Europe relationship; issues emerging in East and Southeast Asia which involved China, North Korea and seas and islands… At the same time, he proposed the content of cooperation in terms of scholar exchange; organizing academic activities (research, workshops, exchanging research results on the basis of common concerns for peace, stability, development and regional cooperation); collaboration in the field of publications (Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities) aiming to affirm the prestige of the magazine in the region and worldwide.

In response to the Vice President of VASS, Mr. Suh Chung - ha expressed his pleasure and gratitude for the welcome of VASS and introduced organizational structure, main tasks and functions of JPI and emphasized that Korea especially respected the relationship with ASEAN (including Vietnam).

Through his business trip to Southeast Asia and Vietnam this time, Mr. Suh Chung-ha had an opportunity to exchange with research agencies of some ASEAN countries, and he expected to receive sharing opinions about Korea-China relationship from experts and scholars of ASEAN countries in general and of Vietnam in particular.

In addition, the President of JPI highly appreciated international cooperation activities of VASS and hoped to strongly develop research exchanges to contribute to the enhancement of academic collaboration and exchange between the two sides.

After the meeting, the delegation from JPI held a round-table discussion with the Institute for Chinese Studies to discuss further the relationship between China, Vietnam and Korea to open more directions for research and scientific cooperation between the two sides in times to come.
