Thayer, the University of New South Wales, the Australian Defence Force Academy; Prof. Dr. Pierre Asselin, Hawaii Pacific University (the United States of America); from the France Republic including scientists of Dr. Alain Ruscio, Director of the Centre for Information and Documentation of Vietnam, Paris, Prof. Dr. Hugues Tertrais, University of Paris I; Prof. Dr. Kim Sang Bong, the Chonnam National University (Korea); Dr. Jonathan Daniel London, the University of Hong Kong; Prof. Dr. Detley Briedens, the University of Gisen University (the Federal Republic of Germany)… Vietnamese participants were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, President of VASS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Duc, Vice President of VASS; representatives of some ministries, central institutions, leaders of some provinces and many scientists of universities, research institutes, etc.
On the conference’s opening speech, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang emphasized the anniversary of 40 years of the total Liberation of South Vietnam is an occasion to review the nation’s tradition of indomitable struggle against invasion, to furthermore confirm the great value and historical meaning of the resistance against the USA for protecting the country; to express gratitude and deeply remember the heroic sacrifices of the heroic martyrs who participated without regret of their bone blood for the cause of national liberation and reunification; as well as an occasion to review the 40-year road of building, protection and development of the country and international integration; to evaluate again the results achieved and limited persistently aspects needed to be overcome in order to continuously move forward on the next road.

The conference’s Board of organization received nearly 70 reports of scientists, including 16 reports of international researchers from Laos, Cambodia, Russia, France, the US, Britain, Australia, Hong Kong (China), Korea, etc. The reports focus on such issues as: great historic roles and meanings of the victoria 30/4/1975, the total Liberation of South Vietnam, reunification of the Fatherland, Vietnam’s relationships with the world in the history and the present; Issues of war consequences and surmounting war consequences; Vietnam’s current role and position in the world; Vietnam after 40 years of peace, reunification and nearly 30 years of implementing the renovation policy, Vietnam’s issues of defence, security and sovereignty on the mainland and islands.
After the introduction report of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Quang Hai, Director of Institute of History, speeches at the conference hall and comments for debate, raising questions and effervescent discuss of international and Vietnamese scholars focused on making clearly three following issues: Firstly, highlighting and clarifying the great victory of the General attack and uprising in Spring 1975, confirming historic value and meaning of the resistance against the USA for protecting the country to development process of Vietnam’s history; Secondly, the country’s reunification in a whole of the homeland, all people of the country join hands and make efforts to implement the comprehensive renovation and deeper increasingly integration into the world economy. Unified Vietnam’s position, role and reputation is increasing highly in the world on all areas of politics, economy, culture, education, diplomacy, defence-security; Thirdly, for independence, freedom, happiness of the people, Vietnam always firmly maintains the political security and the territorial integrity, actively participates and takes responsibility in the common struggle for a world of peace and prosperity.
The scholars highlighted and clarified the great victory of the General attack and uprising in Spring 1975, confirmed historic value and meaning of the resistance against the USA for protecting the country to development process of Vietnam’s history. Many scholars mentioned Vietnam’s advantages, difficulties, challenges after the reunification date of the homeland, the country all entered the period of recovery, healing the wounds of the war, building and protecting the country, developing economy and comprehensively conducting the renovation. Besides, the scholars focused on debate for making more deeply and specifically achievements gained by Vietnam in the 40 years of peace, reunification, development and international integration.
The conference received speeches and new documentations, new awareness about contents of the conference’s theme with objective and scientific spirit, thence drawing valuable experience lessons in the last 40 years, especially implementation process of nearly 30 years renovation, that is scientific and practical basics for contribution to building, protection and development of the country in the present, striving to build a Vietnam country of peace, reunification, independence, democracy, wealth and strength.
The conference closed well successfully after the working day of extreme tension, seriousness, gaining high scientific quality. Issues that were effervescently discussed at the conference will be sure to generate inspiration for next researches and conferences in the future./.
