President of Vietnam Academy of Social Science (VASS) - Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan had a meeting with Ms. Hellen Zille, Mayor of Western Cape Province, South Africa to visit and work at the Academy on September 11, 2017 at Lieu Giai Headquarters No. 1, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, Vietnam.

Attending the meeting with Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan was MA. Nguyen Thanh Ha,  Head of International Cooperation Department; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung, director of Institute of African and Middle East Studies; Assoc.Prof. Dr. Chu Van Tuan, Director of Institute for Religious Studies; Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Deputy Director of Vietnam Institute of Economics; Dr. Tran Thi Phuong Hoa, Deputy Director of the Institute of History; Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh, Deputy Director of Institute of Anthropology.

Along with Mrs. Hellen Zille was Dr. Laurine Platzky, Deputy Head of Strategic Programs, Office of the Governor; Ms. Phathutshedzo Mabuda, Acting Head of International Relations, International Relations Division; Mr. Che Smith, Senior Manager, International Trade (Asia and Middle East); Mr. Hadley Blake, Deputy Head of Reception, Secretariat and Reception; Ms. Maria Westhuizen-Nel, First secretary in charge of politics, Embassy of South Africa; Mr. To Quang Hung, officer of the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Embassy of South Africa.

At the meeting, Mrs. Hellen Zille would like to thank the warm welcome of the Academy as well as expressed the impression of the achievements Vietnam has gained since the war. On the occasion of this visit, she wanted to receive many exchanges and sharing experiences on the development of Vietnam in recent years.

Also at the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan expressed his pleasure to welcome Mrs. Hellen Zille; At the same time, introducing some highlights of Vietnam's history of fighting against foreign invasions in the twentieth century.  He emphasized that Viet Nam attaches special importance to external relations, step by step affirming national position and strengthening cooperation with other countries in all aspects; appreciate the potential and cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Africa; Especially, interested in the economic, trade and tourism development of Western Cape Province, South Africa.

Discussing Vietnam's development issues in the current period, the President of the Academy and Mrs. Hellen Zille discussed the lesson from the reunification between the South and North Vietnam; thereby developing a strongly the socialist-oriented  market economy with the aim of building socialism for human and equitable and democratic society; experience building postwar economic model, the economic growth model (focusing on science and technology, labor productivity and competitiveness) as well as overcoming the challenges of economic development (social inequality, income…). In addition, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan emphasized the importance of history and tradition that created strength and motivation for each ethnic group to focus on economic development, building a human-centered policy, ensuring social security contributes to the prosperity of Vietnam.

At the end of the meeting, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan appreciated the prospect of cooperation between the two countries; hopefully two sides will continue to understand each other, contributing to promoting cooperation, share experiences in developing the country in the future.
