The Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences receives the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam

In the morning in May 27th 2015, at meeting hall 3D, No. 1A Lieu Giai, Ba Dinh, Hanoi, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) had a meeting with the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Vietnam. At the meeting there were participants from VASS including Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan, Vice President of VASS; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen An Ha, Director of Institute for European Studies; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chu Duc Dung, Director of Institute of World Economics and Politics; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Nhu Phat, former Director of Institute of State and Law; Dr. Nguyen Anh Vu, Deputy Director of Institute of Regional Sustainable Development; Dr. Dao Hoang Tuan, Deputy Director of Institute of Human Geography; Dr. Nguyen Chien Thang, Deputy Director of Vietnam Institute of Economics. Participants from the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam are: Mr. Juan Zaratiegui, Political Commissioner; Dr. Sophie Boisseu du Rocher, Senior researcher, the Center for Asian Studies, the French Institute for International relations (Ifri).

At the meeting, on behalf of leaders of VASS, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan, Vice President of VASS introduced functions and tasks of VASS, emphasized position and roles of VASS in research, training and consultancy on policy, and mentioned some major orientations of VASS in the present and the next time, contributing to building of development policies, strategy of the country in the context of international integration. The Vice President Nguyen Quang Thuan highlighted that VASS developed many tightly cooperative relations with many scientific institutions of EU and European countries, and affirmed that VASS is already to cooperate with EU in research on areas and consultancy of development policy.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Thuan and leaders from specific institutes presenting at the meeting suggested some areas for cooperation between the two parties, such as: (1) General issues of sustainable development; (2) Capacity of recovery and response to climate change; (3) High technology agriculture in association with tourism in terms of rural development; (4) Evaluation of understanding of local business community about EU market – research in some provinces and cities in Vietnam; (5) Impact of more intensive and extensive relation in politics and economy between Vietnam and EU on Vietnam’s export potentiality; (6) Development of middle class – comparative research between Vietnam and Europe; (7) Economic growth and social stability – Europe’s experience and implication of policy for Vietnam; (8) Social advancement, creation of opportunities for women and gender equality - Europe’s experience and implication of policy for Vietnam; (9) Process of legislation integration in Europe and experience lessons, suggestion for ASEAN; (10) Relation in legislation between the European Union and its member countries; (11) Protection of human rights in the European Union; (12) Free trade zone between Vietnam and EU: opportunities and challenges from the two parties’ perspectives; (13) Developmental cooperation between Vietnam and EU: orientations in the context of that Vietnam became an average-income country; (14) Urban - regional plan and development in the European Union and policy suggestion for Vietnam; (15) Integration experience of EU and meaning for Vietnam in integration in the AEC community; (16) Opportunities and challenges for relations in trade, investment, labour between Vietnam and EU under impact of the FTA between Vietnam and EU.

In response to the suggestions from VASS, Mr. Juan Zaratiegui welcomed and affirmed that these issues will report by the Delegation of the European Union to Vietnam to the European Union in Brussels, when they are approved there is responsibility for coordination among member countries in relation to other countries in the world as EU’s major activities via the Ambassadors. Mr. Juan Zaratiegui hoped that in the next stage, cooperation between the two parties will be more continuously extended, in particular such areas as climate change, improvement and assurance of cooperation in human rights, free trade agreement, health…

The meeting generates more understanding between the two parties and promises to open many cooperative directions in issues concerned by the two parties./.
